As our school is multi aged I always like to design lessons that have a lot of scope for differentiating with ability. We recently worked on printing Under the Sea "seascapes" with our junior classes. Juniors includes grade Prep, 1 and 2.
We started off sponge printing our sea backgrounds. We talked about how we can graduate the colour to show the deeper part of the ocean coming to the shallower part. We used a variety of greens and blues to explore shades. We also talked about different ways we could apply the paint using sponges. For example a dabbing motion rather then a painting motion. We also added glitter to our sea paints. Students also sponged the sea bed out of sand coloured paint with sand in it to give texture.
As you can see from these images we got great variety in our backgrounds.
The next lesson involved printing on our backgrounds to create reefs. We bought a lot of different objects for students to print with so they could make coral, seaweed etc. Students enjoyed experimenting with the different objects. Yes as you can see we did get the odd rock floating around in the ocean but overall they got the idea.
The final thing we did was to print our fish using butcher meat trays to create our patterns for printing. First we used a stencil to trace and cut out our sea animal. Then we printed on our fish from the pattern we had made on the meat tray.
There were some difficulties associated with this such as mixed paint and smudged patterns but I felt it gave students a good idea of more traditional printing techniques.
The finished designs were lovely and bright and students then did a digital reflection on their pieces using the showbie app.
